Both sides agreed on issues relating to elevating Vietnam-Vatican relationship from the level of non-resident envoy to resident envoy.

Deputy Minister Bui Thanh Son said the Vietnamese Party and government have fine-tuned laws to ensure freedom of belief and religion, while local administration at all levels have supported the Catholic community’s activities. Mr. Son suggested the Vatican  encourage Vietnam Catholics to attach to the nation and contribute to national development.

The Vatican’s Under-Secretary said the Pope has always paid special attention to Vietnam and expects Vietnam’s Catholic Church to abide by Vietnamese law and contribute to socio-economic development.
