Goat raising brings Ninh Thuan farmer out of poverty

(VOVWORLD) - Ninh Thuan province has over the past years supported farmers to apply science and technology to cultivation and husbandry, considering it a key factor to improve their income. Farmer Le Thi Kim Loan has become well-off 7 years after getting involved in a goat raising model.

Realizing the distinctive features of goats, which are easy to raise and are resistant to diseases, Le Thi Kim Loan from An Hai commune, decided to invest in goat farming. Ms. Loan said goats eat a variety of food available in nature such as jackfruit leaves and hibiscus. The model does not require large investment. In 2010, Loan began her goat rearing business with a loan of 1,100 USD from the Vietnam Bank of Social Policies in Ninh Phuoc district and a goat raising project: “My family escaped poverty thanks to this business. I have carefully researched goats and applied good husbandry techniques”.

Loan strictly follows farming regulations to prevent an epidemic: cleaning and sterilizing breeding facilities and properly installing a watering system. She also grows plants to feed the goats. Each year, Loan earns about 3,000 USD from selling goats for breeding and meat. She plans to expand her farm to include more milk goats in the near future. Truong Thi Mai Dung, Chairwoman of An Hai commune’s Women’s Association, said: “At the beginning, Loan raised just a few goats. After attending a number of training courses and taking part in a project to develop local agriculture, she expanded her farm. She also enthusiastically helps other local farmers develop their farming”.

The closed goat raising model requires small initial investment but produces a good profit, which makes it a good model for poor farm households.
