Ngoc Gam, youth talent of amateur singing

(VOVworld) – At the age of 14, Do Thi Ngoc Gam of My Tu district, Soc Trang province, won second prize at the youth amateur singing contest sponsored by the Bac Lieu radio and TV station. Gam is greatly admired for her voice.

The youth amateur singing contest held by Bac Lieu radio and TV station was the first major contest that Ngoc Gam had ever participated in. Born into a poor family, she had to prepare for the contest by herself. Gam drew loud applause from the audience and won a prize. Dong Hoang Nam, former head of the Golden Bell and the Song Hau reformed theatre troupe, said Ngoc Gam has only been singing for 2 years, but her talent surprises him: “I have taught a number of students, many of whom have become popular artists, but Ngoc Gam is the youngest. Ngoc Gam shows great interest and sings very well the songs that I teach. She has a great sense of music. Gam can sing like Thanh Loan, the late well-known amateur artist”.

Do Thi Ngoc Gam is the youngest of 3 sisters in a poor family. She was keen on singing from the age of 6. Her first teacher was her grandfather. Because of her great interest in singing, her grandfather took Gam to his friend, emeritus artist Dong Hoang Nam for training. With Nam’s instruction, Gam gained success in a number of amateur singing contest. Born in the land of ancient singing, ly and xe singing has seeped into her soul. Ngoc Gam says she has received great support from her family: “My grandparents and parents greatly support me in my singing. Every day, I practice singing with my grandfather. I like singing contests and eagerly take part in every contest in which my grandfather registers me”.

Ngoc Gam passed her final secondary school examination with good marks. Gam was encouraged by her teacher Hoang Nam and her family to continue training to become a professional reformed theatre artist. Artist Dong Hoang Nam, said: “We hope that Gam can follow a singing career. When Gam finishes high school, I will take her to Ho Chi Minh city to be trained at the Stage University”.  

With her singing talent, the prize at the youth amateur singing contest was only the first step of Ngoc Gam’s singing career.
