Professor Nguyen Anh Tri was born in 1957 in Quang Binh province. After finishing high school, Tri studied for the physics entrance exam at Vinh University of Education, but a bout of malaria prevented him from being admitted to the university. This incident drove him to another path: medicine, where he found great success. Professor Nguyen Anh Tri: “When I was a high school student, I was interested in many subjects, such as physics and literature. Then I got malaria. When the doctors saved my life, I realized the importance of medicine and decided to become a doctor”.

In 1976, Nguyen Anh Tri was admitted to Hanoi Medical University. After graduating, he worked at the Department of Hematology and Blood Transfusion at Vietnam-Soviet Friendship Hospital. Tri got involved in treating patients, researching blood diseases, and giving lectures. In 2003, he was appointed Director of the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. Professor Tri has become a leading researcher in Vietnam with more than 250 research projects on hematology and blood transfusion and 18 books in this field.

Tri was co-founder of the National Steering Committee of the Voluntary Blood Donation Campaign. Under Tri’s management, the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion has worked with the Vietnam Red Cross Society and the Vietnam Youth Union to promote voluntary blood donation. He has helped organize such events as the 2004 “Run for the voluntary blood donation campaign”, and “One drop of blood, one heart”. Nguyen Anh Tri initiated and organized the “Red Spring festival”, which mobilized thousands of people to donate blood. That festival was applauded by the World Health Organization for alleviating Vietnam’s blood shortage.

We have learned a lot from him, both professionally and ethically”.

Professor Nguyen Anh Tri was awarded the “Labor Hero” title, the “People’s Physician” title, and the Labor Order First Class.
