Professor Tran Duy Quy contributes greatly to Vietnam's agricultural development

Professor Tran Duy Quy was born in 1948 in the northern province of Ha Nam. After graduating from the Faculty of Genetics at Vietnam National University Hanoi in 1970, he worked at the Vietnamese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, specializing in transplanting rice varieties. Professor Quy helped a lot when Vietnam faced a period of food shortage by creating dozens of rice varieties of high productivity which were also appreciated by other countries. Quy said: “While working at the Agricultural Genetics Institute, my colleagues and I created more than 30 rice varieties. In 1995, I was honored by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in Asia-Pacific for my contribution to developing the rice sector in Asia. I was also involved in developing a technology map for food production in Vietnam which was honored as the most outstanding scientific research work in the country in 2014. This project was also acknowledged by the FAO and the International Atomic Energy Agency that year”.

Professor Tran Duy Quy also has a broad knowledge of flowers and ornamental trees. He used to be Chairman of the Hanoi Orchid Association.  Mr. Vuong Xuan Nguyen of the Hanoi Ornamental Plants and Animals Association said: “Professor Tran Duy Quy is one of the leading scientists in the rice sector. He has been asked by the Hanoi People’s Committee to build a rice trademark for the capital city for export”.

Professor Tran Duy Quy is the only Vietnamese to be invited 3 times to the International Congress of Genetics - Russia (1978), India (1983), and Canada (1988). He has received the Vietnam Fund for Supporting Technological Creations, and a State award in rice hybrids in 2005. Mr. Quy said: “I will apply the most advanced technology to improve the quality of Vietnamese rice. We will also focus on building and promoting the trademark of Vietnamese rice to the world market”.

Professor Dr. Tran Dinh Quy was profiled in the book “100 Vietnamese professors who have made great contributions” published by the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations.
