The Radio Technology Center manages and operates 12 radio transmission stations throughout Vietnam. All transmitters use high-voltage electronic vacuum tubes, each of which can cost up to hundreds of thousands of USD. Director of the center Vu Hai Quang said: “When these tubes were no longer in use, we extracted red copper from their radiator panels to cast a bust of President Ho Chi Minh to mark VOV’s 70th anniversary. We thought that nothing would be more precious than a statue of our beloved President.”

The statue is 85cm tall and weighs 115kg. Because it was made of red copper, the statue looks more polished and beautiful than those made of bronze. Mr. Quang said: “Many of these tubes, including ones from Quan Tre station,  were used during important periods of Vietnam’s history. At 11:30 AM on April 30, 1975, the station transmitted the announcement of the surrender of President of the Republic of Vietnam Duong Van Minh, marking the end of the historic Ho Chi Minh campaign, which liberated southern Vietnam and reunified Vietnam.”

All staff members of the Radio Technology Center donated money for the casting of the bust, which was part of a series of activities to celebrate VOV’s 70th anniversary.
