ASEAN ministers discuss fight against transnational crime

(VOVWORLD) - The 14th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC 14) was held via videoconference on Thursday.

Themed “Cohesive and responsive ASEAN in preventing and fighting transnational crime”, the conference is one of key cooperation mechanisms for fighting transnational criminals and a crucial pillar of the ASEAN Political-Security Community.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said the event showed the ministers’ commitment to maintaining a peaceful, secure, and stable ASEAN. He urged ASEAN countries to continue to fully implement the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and the Hanoi Declaration on the ASEAN Community Vision after 2025. In his opening speech, Mr. Phuc said:

“We need to pay special attention to building a strong Political-Security Community, thereby affirming the role of the AMMTC mechanism in fighting crime, maintaining regional peace, security, and stability, strengthening trust and high-level information exchange between ASEAN law enforcement agencies, preventing territorial abuse, improving cooperation among ASEAN countries in fighting transnational crime, and preventing social disorder during by the Covid-19 pandemic.” 

The AMMTC 14, chaired by the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security, was attended by ASEAN Ministers in charge of transnational crime prevention, the ASEAN Secretary General, and the ASEAN Heads of Consular Affairs and Immigration.
