An Giang province unites to build new rural areas

(VOVworld) – An Giang province has mobilized all resources to fully tap its advantages in agricultural production. One concern for the local authority and people is how to improve traveling, studying, and living conditions in the countryside. They have exerted more efforts on the new rural development program to give a face-lift to the whole area.

An Giang province covers a large area from the mountains to the plain, islands, and border areas. Many ethnic groups live harmoniously with each other including the Kinh, Hoa, Cham, and Khmer. Building new rural areas is the main goal of the authorities to change the rural appearance and ensure an adequate living for the people. The new rural area program began with the pagodas, local authorities, and people working together to create roads. They donated land, labor, and construction materials. The 1-km main road and lanes in Pong Ro hamlet were smoothly paved. Monk Chau Si Tha is Head of the Pong Ro pagoda: "In the past, transportation was very difficult. The transport of farm produce and rice was difficult. The children used to go to school on muddy roads. We were always thinking about these problems, so we had to improve the situation and the people supported us a lot."

Thoai Son is a remote district in An Giang province. In previous years, the whole district used to be inundated in flood season. Its roads were muddy and slippery. Now, cars can reach the district centre in any season. Danh Phong donated land for rural road construction in Thoai Son district. "The program is a good collaboration between the people and State. Previously, traveling was hard and roads were slushy in the rainy season. With the government investment, we donated land to expand roads. Children going to school and trading are now convenient." Phong said.

Building rural roads has been the most successful work of the new rural development program in An Giang province over the last 2 years. The province has enhanced communication to change the awareness and behavior of the people and officials. Do Vu Hung is Deputy Director of An Giang Province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. "The new rural area program in An Giang has progressed well because we have clearly identified the responsibility of the heads of each administrative level. We have created incentives to boost progress."

Specific activities and focused investment have changed the rural environment and improved people’s living conditions.
