Bat Trang mobilizes inner strength for new rural development

(VOVworld) - Located along the Red River and about 10 km from Hanoi, Bat Trang village is home to 1200 households that are mainly involved in the village’s traditional craft of pottery. After 3 years implementing the national new rural development program, the commune has completed 15 of the program’s 19 criteria.

Dating back 700 years, the unique craft of pottery making is Bat Trang village’s special strength in new rural development. Pham Huy Khoi, Deputy Secretary of Bat Trang communal Party Committee, said: "We don’t have agriculture in Bat Trang, so for us, there are only 18 instead of 19 criteria in order to complete the national program on rural development. For economic development, we focus on boosting ceramic production, and enhancing cooperation with foreign businesses for trade promotion. Our ceramic products are now available around the world."

Pottery making has made Bat Trang today a prosperous and modern village. The village’s ceramic products have not only prevailed domestic markets but also been exported to countries worldwide. This trade has earned some local businesses annually revenues of nearly 1 million USD. Pham Huy Khoi again:"Each household involved in pottery making can generate jobs for hundreds of locals and workers from neighboring areas, ensuring stable local economic development. Local villagers have also applied advanced technology in their production for higher income. Our village’s annual average per capita income has reached 1500 USD."

Bat Trang villagers are well-aware of preserving their traditional cultural values as part of efforts to complete the national program on rural development. Artisan Pham Ngoc Huy told VOV: "It’s essential to combine both traditional and modern factors for the village’s comprehensive development, especially in making ceramic products.  Advanced technology has helped us make products of better quality while the old ceramic patterns and designs make our products unique."

As Bat Trang ceramic products are becoming more and more popular worldwide, locals have acknowledged the importance of promoting their business prestige by ensuring products quality and protecting the environment. Nguyen Thi Dung owns a ceramic production facility: "We pay attention to any detail in making our products, from hand-writing designs and patterns to the baking techniques. We keep our predecessors’ traditional craft know-how while applying modern technology when appropriate to enhance our products’ quality. We have even imported special technologies to refine our products."

Completing the national new rural development program is just the beginning of fulfilling Bat Trang village’s targets which aim to make Bat Trang a craft village with sustainable development and high living conditions, while its rich traditional values are carefully maintained.
