Quiet people stood in a queue as long as several km to bid farewell to the General a week before the official funeral. Photos of the General and emotional tributes to him filled the social networks even before the conventional media covered the news of his death. These are signs of people’s consensus when expressing condolences for a human being.

And this is also the last exploit of General Vo Nguyen Giap, a man famous for feats of arms. It would be redundant to talk about those feats of arms because the world is already aware of those feats. It would also be redundant to talk about the General’ personality.

There’s no need to talk about the personality of a person who inspired grief and respect even in his former foes. This was proved during the more than a century of his lifetime. But it would be a serious omission if his last exploit was not noted of, what he brought about for the people with his passing, which has ignited faith in those still living.

A person could lose faith in morality while witnessing the bad things that occur every day.  But looking at the silent, grieving line of people mourning his death, faith returns. This image reflects one man’s values, wisdom, patriotism, personality and simplicity, which people sincerely aspire to.

We might be pessimistic about the deteriorating values, about people who are chasing vainglory or materialism, but listening to people sharing their feelings about the General, we realize that the people will never forget a person who contributed to national pride.

People’s faith might be obscured sometimes by the negative events and troubles of the nation. Many of us try to revive our faith by actions, words and sacrifices.

Sometimes, we become desperate and hopeless when our efforts seem too little to overcome the bad things in our lives. But looking at the queue of quiet, grieving people in front of 30 Hoang Dieu Street, hope revives.

How could we not believe in the resilience of a nation that bows its head before a great personality rather than before cruel forces?

How could we not believe in a better future for the nation when the most ordinary citizens need feats they can take pride in?

Even after his death, General Vo Nguyen Giap continues to bring faith to his fellow country people. Even after his death he has one final exploit, much greater than the feats he accomplished during his lifetime.

Soldiers who believed in his talent won the victory of Dien Bien Phu against the French colonialists. Now, the faith he creates in people’s hearts could be the beginning of an even greater feat.
