Vietnam-US seek to strengthen ties

(VOVworld) – Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong received a delegation of US parliamentarians led by the Minority leader of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi in Hanoi on Tuesday. Pelosi said that both Republicans and Democrats supported the US government in strengthening ties with Vietnam and deploying their comprehensive partnership in line with the 2013 Joint Statement. Mr. Trong asked the US to continue supporting Vietnam in resolving the aftermath of war, particularly Agent Orange/Dioxin, mine clearances, and the sharing of information on Vietnamese personnel who went missing during the war. He also proposed that both sides increase cooperation in a number of areas of US potential when required by Vietnam.
Ms. Pelosi was received by President Truong Tan Sang the same day. President Sang asked Ms. Pelosi and other US parliamentarians to use their influence in the US Congress to promote the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership.
At a earlier reception for Ms. Pelosi, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh said Vietnam attached great importance to relations with the US and considered the US a leading trade partner. He said that both countries should increase the exchange of visits and contacts, particularly in economics, trade, and investment as both countries are preparing to mark the 20th anniversary of their diplomatic ties. He also reiterated Vietnam's commitment to TPP negotiations and asked the US to support Vietnam in its reform process and resolving the aftermath of the war.
