APEC officials also debated promoting sustainable, creative and inclusive growth; fostering regional economic connectivity, helping micro, small and medium-sized enterprises by supporting them to enhance their competitiveness and innovation in the digital era; and enhancing food security and sustainable agriculture to be adaptable to climate change.

At the meeting, Vietnam called on APEC’s member economies to increase experience sharing, capacity improvement, and technical support among customs agencies.

“The meeting aims to create better conditions for global trade in APEC economies and to ensure security for economies and community health. It also provided an opportunity to introduce to other APEC members what the Vietnamese customs sector has been doing to keep up with their counterparts”, said Nguyen Van Can, Director General of the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

A seminar on disaster risk financing and insurance policies was held on the sidelines of the meeting of the 2017 APEC Deputy Finance Ministers and another of Deputy Governors of APEC Central Banks.

“Natural disasters have occurred more frequently around the world causing great economic losses. Natural disasters are considered one of the four priorities and member countries have agreed that disaster risk financing and insurance initiatives will be the main topic of the APEC Ministers’ Meeting in October”, Nguyen Viet Loi, Head of the National Institute for Finance under the Ministry of Finance, explained.
