Chanting festival promotes central region’s folk music

(VOVWORLD) - The “2022 chanting festival” was held in Thua Thien-Hue province as part of the Autumn Hue Festival, helping to preserve and promote the folk music of Vietnam’s central region.

240 artists with 6 art troupes from central provinces performed at the event. 

“The chanting festival is organized every two years by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to promote the folk music and dances of the region and teach people about the land, people and culture of Vietnam,” said Phan Thanh Hai, Director of the Thua Thien-Hue Department of Culture and Sports.

Each art troupe had 35 minutes to demonstrate two or more art forms. Nguyen Thanh Hai, Director of the Thua Thien-Hue Center for Culture and Cinema, said, “This festival showcases the folk music of Vietnam’s northern and central regions, including Vi Dam folk singing, the folk songs of Binh Tri Thien, Ma river chanting, and Hue chanting.”

8 gold medals and 12 silver medals were presented to the most outstanding performances. Le Thuy chanting, Chau van (a Vietnamese form of ritual singing), panpipe and a flash mob performance all won gold medals. 2 art troupes from Nghe An and Thua Thien-Hue province won 2 gold medals each.

“The festival exposes visitors to traditional and contemporary art forms of Hue and Vietnam’s northern and central provinces. The songs and dances depict the land, people, and folk music of this region,” said Luong Duc Thang, an official of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
