Oceans are under threats

Oceans are being threatened by serious environmental pollution caused by industrial waste. Global warming is changing the living environment of marine organisms. Changes in the ocean mean that marine organisms are on the verge of extinction, particularly coral reefs. Surveys show that 30% of sea fish are being eradicated, 20% of coral reefs have disappeared, and a million sea birds along with thousands of aquatic species have died due to plastic waste. A study shows that with the current pace of pollution, discarded plastic garbage could outweigh fish by 2050 if nothing is done. The surplus of CO2 has increased the acid volume in sea water thus altering chemicals in oceans and affecting the productivity, living conditions, and foods of larva and the growth of marine organisms, especially calcium carbonate shells. Scientists warn that oceans are degrading seriously and marine organisms are on the verge of the most serious ever extinction.  

The UN has convened a conference on oceans in New York for the first time ever to discuss methods to protect and sustainably use oceans, seas and marine resources. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called on countries to realize the UN Sustainable Development Goal on cleaning the planet with specific actions. The UN Chief asked countries to end the separation between economic needs and the health of oceans and combine sustainable protection and use of marine resources, manage fishing, reduce sea pollution, and clear plastic waste. He also asked the 193 UN member countries to realize the Agenda 2030, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda Program with funding commitments.
