Support campaign expanded to help teachers in remote regions

(VOVWORLD) - Over the past few years, the Ministry of Education and Training and the National Education Union of Vietnam have carried out a campaign to rally support for education and teachers in mountain, remote, and disadvantaged areas. The campaign has been eagerly responded to by teachers, students, and the public.

There are more than 1.5 million teachers nationwide. Many of them have devoted their lifetime to teaching in mountainous, remote, border, or island areas.

Teacher Lo Thi Dinh of the Lo Lo ethnic group teaches in Ha Giang, a disadvantaged mountain province in northwestern Vietnam. After graduating from the Ha Giang Education College, Ms. Dinh came to work at Hoa Lan Kindergarten in a small class of poor children, who are not fluent in Vietnamese. Dinh said it is her love for the children and teaching that keeps her in this disadvantaged mountain province. Dinh continuously revises her teaching methodology, consistently honors good performance, and builds a close relationship with the students.

The campaign will continue next year to mobilize more support for teachers working in disadvantaged areas. Tran Van Thanh is Vice Chairman of the Hanoi Education Union: “Kindergarten teachers have to come to class very early and return home late but their salaries are low. The state and the public need to coordinate to increase their incomes. The Hanoi Education Union is implementing comprehensive educational reform that includes salary reform for teachers, particularly kindergarten teachers.”

The campaign has raised than 390,000 USD to build 15 public housing for teachers and 8 clean water systems for schools in 15 disadvantaged provinces.
