Over the past 5 years, Vietnam raised more than 56 million USD for a fund to pay debts of gratitude and support heroic mothers and built about 100 thousand charity houses. In 2015, 98% of policy beneficiary households have average or above average living conditions. There have been widespread movements like “Paying debts of gratitude”, “Remembering the source of the water we drink”, and “Communes, wards take care of war invalids, martyrs and revolutionary contributors.”

On the occasion of the 69th War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27), nearly 2 million revolutionary contributors have been given gifts worth nearly 18 million USD this year. Do Thi Hong Ha, Deputy Head of the Bureau of National Devotees of the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, said the Ministry is making sure all those who have rendered great service to the nation enjoy preferential policies: “The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs has issued a post-review document. The government has ordered the strengthened implementation of preferential policies for national devotees and regulated responsibilities of sectors and agencies in this work. The government’s order also stipulates responsibilities of related agencies in resolving pending dossiers related to national devotees.”

Vietnam’s goal until 2020 is to ensure that 99% of households of revolutionary contributors have average or above average living conditions for their particular residential area. All communes and wards should take good care of revolutionary contributors and everyone subject to social protection should be entitled to a monthly social allowance. At a meeting to commend prominent national devotees on July 23 in Can Tho city, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc urged continued fine-tuning of policies to make sure that no one who deserves preferential treatment is left out: “We should promote the movement of paying debts of gratitude and the motto “The State, people and national devotees make an effort to forge ahead” to make sure every family of national devotees is stable in wealth, happy in spirit, and takes part in useful social activities. Authorities at all levels should pay more attention to war invalids, martyrs’ relatives, and revolutionary contributors. The awarding of war merits should be carried out regularly.”

Prime Minister Phuc also called attention to education, vocational training, and employment for revolutionary contributors and their relatives.
