Vietnam encourages energy saving practice

(VOVWORLD) -Vietnam’s national target program obtained the target of saving 5.65% of energy in the 2011-2015 period. The Ministry of Industry and Trade affirmed the result at a recent conference in Hanoi and revealed a long term target of saving 8 to 10% of national commercial energy consumption from 2019 to 2030.

A study by Green Innovation and Development Centre showed that after 2020, Vietnam may not have to build new coal thermal power plans, but still can maintain a safe energy system at reasonable prices. The study suggests that in 2030, Vietnam can increases renewable energy from about 21% to 30%, natural gas from 14% to 22% and reduces coal power from about 42% to 24%. Nghiem Vu Khai, Vice President of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations said shifting to green energy is very important and necessary because Vietnam is one of a few countries which are most affected by climate change.

Nguy Thi Khanh, GreenID’s Executive Director, said the safest and acceptable solution to meet Vietnam’s energy demand and its commitments to the Paris Agreement is to avoid building 30,000 MW of new coal power by 2030, which is equivalent to about 25 coal power plants.

Mrs. Khanh said the government’s new policy to support renewable energy and the connection of solar power to the national grid has encouraged the production of solar energy and investors to participate in Vietnam’s energy market. Mrs. Khanh said: “Developing countries have studied how to maximize renewable energy. The best way for Vietnam is to combine renewable energy production and energy saving solutions.”

Green development is a smart way for Vietnam, which has abundant resources for solar and wind power.
