Vietnamese athletes hope to shine at Tokyo Olympics 2020

(VOVWORLD) - Tokyo Olympics 2020 opens in Japan on Friday. 18 Vietnamese athletes will compete in 11 sports: swimming, weightlifting, judo, shooting, badminton, boxing, gymnastics, taekwondo, archery, athletics, and rowing.

11,000 athletes from 206 countries and territories will compete at Tokyo Olympics 2020, which will end on August 8.

Tran Duc Phan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Sports Administration, who is leading the Vietnamese delegation, said,  'After nearly 2 years of preparing, 18 Vietnamese athletes have qualified to compete at Tokyo Olympics 2020. We aim to win medals at these Games. Competing at the Tokyo Olympics will allow us to evaluate the development of Vietnamese sports and map out orientations for the future.' 

Among the athletes, shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh won one gold and one silver medal at the 2016 Olympics, and 38-year old badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh is the only Vietnamese athlete who has competed at four different Olympic Games. Athlete Quach Thi Lan, who will compete in the women's 400m hurdles, and swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang, who will compete in the men’s 1,500m freestyle, will carry the flag of Vietnam at the opening ceremony. Before departing Vietnam, archer Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu said, all the athletes are determined to do their best. 

Vu says, 'On behalf of the Vietnamese athletes competing at the Olympics, I promise to uphold the spirit of solidarity, friendship, cooperation, and development with our international friends. We promise to stay united, disciplined, and devoted and do our best to gain the highest possible achievements for Vietnam.' 

At Tokyo Olympics 2020, each member of Vietnam’s delegation is a goodwill ambassador who will promote Vietnam’s culture, land, and people to international friends.
