Vietnamese canned lychee goes on sale at French supermarkets

(VOVWORLD) - 20 tons of Vietnamese canned lychees are being sold for the first time at French supermarkets. The lychee was imported by Tang Frères, the largest retail system, importer, and wholesale distributor of Asian food in France.

Vietnamese Ambassador to France Dinh Toan Thang said it’s a major success in the effort to open up a new development direction for Vietnamese fruits in France and the EU. He noted that, although Vietnam has many canned fruit producers, only a modest volume of their products has been imported to France. Given this, Vietnam still has much potential to export its fruits to this market and that businesses should fully capitalise on opportunities in order to reduce the pressure on the sale of fresh fruit in harvest seasons and prove Vietnamese firms’ capacity of ensuring stable fruit supply.

Vu Anh Son, who is in charge of the Vietnamese trade office in France, said they have worked closely with the Trade Promotion Department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade to select suppliers who have a good capacity and knowledge of the import market.

Through Tang Frères, Vietnamese goods can reach big clients such as restaurants, shops, minimarts, and supermarkets.

The EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) has proven to be highly useful for Vietnam in expanding its export markets. Besides incentive tariffs, joining these agreements has promoted Vietnam’s images to foreign partners. Many foreign distribution networks have planned to increase the presence of Vietnamese goods in their systems.

The promotion of canned fruit is one in a range of activities that the Ministry of Industry and Trade is carrying out to expand outlets for Vietnamese agricultural products. It’s part of a project to encourage Vietnamese businesses to join in foreign distribution networks.

On the sideline of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s visit to France in November, a Vietnamese consumer goods week was held at the Carrefour Supermarket in Collégien City to pave the way for Vietnamese goods to penetrate the markets in France and the EU.
