Technology breakthrough to safeguard Vietnam’s airspace

(VOVWORLD) - The Viettel High Technology Industries Corporation (VHT), an affiliate of the Military Industry and Telecoms Group, Viettel, has put into trial operation the Airspace Management and Automated Command System named VQ-2M. This system marks a new milestone in Vietnam’s defense industry, affirming its scientific and technological autonomy in safeguarding its air sovereignty.

Put into operation in September 2025, VQ-2M is an integrated surveillance system that combines artificial intelligence, real-time combat simulation, and automated command operations. The radar stations on the ground, unmanned reconnaissance aircraft, and observation satellites are connected into a unified network to form an “electronic shield” covering Vietnam’s skies.

At the VQ-2M Command Center, rows of monitors display data transmitted from hundreds of sensors. On a large 3D digital map, every moving object is detected, identified, and classified by its level of threat. Any unusual signal in the sky, whether a small UAV or a long-range aircraft, cannot escape the sight of VQ-2M.

The system enables full monitoring of Vietnam’s airspace, which handles about 4,000 to 5,000 flights daily, including unplanned flights. Major General Vu Dai Duong, Deputy Commander of the Air Defense-Air Force Service, said the system can process 300 intelligence inputs in five seconds. It also calculates radar coverage and firing zones, assisting commanders in making quick and effective decisions.

“Viettel has cooperated very well with the Air Defense-Air Force Service in building and deploying this system. The automated command system VQ-2M helps the commanders and combat crews accurately identify and respond to targets with higher speed and precision,” Mr. Duong said.

VQ-2M, developed from the VQ-1M system which has monitored Vietnam’s airspace since 2015, is a major breakthrough in automated command and operational control. It marks the first time a Vietnamese enterprise has mastered and produced a high-tech system for military use.

Mastering the technology, from conceptual design to programming the entire system’s operation, VQ-2M is a testament to the ability of Vietnamese military engineers, the “digital soldiers” of the 4.0 era.

Nguyen Dinh Viet, Head of the VQ-2M Project Team at Viettel, said: “The rehearsal proves that the VQ-2M system can operate in near-real conditions, meeting the higher requirements of the Air Defense-Air Force. The system ensures mobility and adaptability in complex combat situations. We will continue researching to integrate technologies such as machine learning, big data, and artificial intelligence to enhance its automated combat-processing capabilities for future exercises.”

From the Command Center, orders can be instantly transmitted to combat units, including missile battalions, radar stations, and on-duty air defense forces. The VQ-2M system’ three top criteria are fast processing speed, accurate intelligent data analysis, and safety.

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Anh Thai, Commander of Regiment 282, Air Defense-Air Force Service, said: “In the past, most operations relied heavily on manual human activities. Now, smart systems and devices can provide tremendous support. The system allows combat crews to operate with better control, faster response, and greater accuracy.”

The VQ-2M has been installed across air defense units nationwide, from the northernmost to the southernmost regions, from border areas to offshore islands. It creates an “iron shield” guarding Vietnam’s airspace.

The establishment of the airspace surveillance and protection system is an evidence of Vietnam’s capability and intellect in the digital age. Currently, only about ten countries worldwide can independently develop such systems.

Together with many other technologies developed by the Vietnamese army, VQ-2M marks a new milestone in Vietnam’s defense industry, strengthening combat readiness and ensuring the nation is always prepared, without being caught off guard in any situation.
