Dung Quat EZ, a new driver of Quang Ngai’s development

(VOVWORLD) -The Prime Minister has signed a decision approving a general adjustment to the Dung Quat economic zone construction master plan until 2045. Under the plan, Dung Quat will be developed into a multi-sector, multi-field economic center that will make Quang Ngai one of Vietnam’s more developed provinces.

According to the adjusted plan, Dung Quat Economic Zone will cover an area of 45,300 ha. By 2045, it will be a multi-sector, multi-field economic center that includes industry, commerce, service, tourism, agriculture, forestry, and fisheries.

Ha Hoang Viet Phuong, Director of the Management Board of Dung Quat EZ and Quang Ngai Industrial Parks, said the new plan will help Quang Ngai attract strategic investors.

“Dung Quat EZ is important to the development of Quang Ngai province and the region, which still has much growth potential,” said Phuong, adding, “We’re reviewing the projects that have been approved but are being implemented slowly or are behind schedule.”

According to Phuong, the adjusted master-planning for Dung Quat EZ will open up new land funds to attract strategic investors. This is the lever for future development.

The zone will focus on the refinery and petrochemical industry, the chemical industry, and heavy industry, particularly steel rolling, shipbuilding, and other industries associated with deep-water ports. Dung Quat EZ is an important transportation hub for the Central and Central Highlands regions.

Under the plan, Dung Quat will become a developed urban, service, and tourism area of the central key economic region. Dung Quat will have five main functional subdivisions -  Dung Quat North, Chau O-Binh Long, Dung Quat South, Dung Quat Southeast, and Ly Son.

Dang Van Minh, Chairman of Quang Ngai provincial People’s Committee, insisted that the The adjusted plan and the general planning of Quang Ngai are the foundation for achieving the goals set for 2030 with a vision to 2045.

“The Quang Ngai provincial plan will be assessed by ministries and branches before it’s submitted to the Prime Minister for approval. The provincial plan includes building 4 strategic economic corridors and 6 economic spaces,” said Minh.

Regarding urban development in Dung Quat EZ from 2036 to 2045, Quang Ngai will complete advanced infrastructure for urban areas toward establishing the cities of Binh Son and Ly Son and eventually forming a dynamic urban area in Quang Ngai and turning Ly Son Island district into a modern marine tourism city.

According to Pham Thi Huong, Chairwoman of the Ly Son Island district People’s Committee, to develop the 10-square-kilometer island into a marine tourism city, big investors will help the local administration reclaim sea areas to build residential areas, and commercial and service areas.

“But we must harmonize all interests, preserve the natural landscape, and avoid over-building so Ly Son will develop harmoniously,” said Huong.

Over the past two years, Dung Quat EZ attracted 3.85 billion USD in investment capital. To realize the goal of turning Dung Quat into a multi-sector, multi-field economic zone, Quang Ngai has set out specific tasks and began to implement them at the beginning of the year. Close attention has been paid to coordinating land use  and attracting future investment.
