“Readers” is a project which Ph.D in Literature and amateur painter Nguyen Thi Thanh Luu has been developing since Vietnam’s first social distancing period in 2020.
Ph.D in Literature, amateur painter Nguyen Thi Thanh Luu Amid the distress resulting from the global pandemic, Thanh Luu painted readers as an example of calm beauty. "I love books, so I’m always fascinated by the beauty of people who read books. Wherever I go, I usually pay more attention to readers. They can be anyone, at any age, in any state, but more importantly they express the beauty of concentration and calm, especially when they are alone,” said painter Thanh Luu.
Readers often pay little attention to their surroundings and naturally enter the world of words and meaning. They look beautiful because they’re reading books. The author spent much time admiring readers and including them in her artwork.
“I believe that book lovers and readers have a high capacity for empathy that helps them appreciate all things in life more clearly. As a result, their lives are more peaceful and full,” said Thanh Luu.
“Portraying readers in my paintings is a way to show my admiration for them. Each painting represents a stoppage of time, featuring a beautiful moment of a peaceful mood. Each painting is a story I guess and I use brush and watercolor to express them,” Thanh Luu said. Here are a number of the paintings on display at the exhibition:
