39 victims in Essex lorry tragedy confirmed as Vietnamese

(VOVWORLD) - All the 39 people found dead in a container truck in the UK last month are Vietnamese, the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security and UK police announced Thursday.

The victims were from Hai Phong, Hai Duong, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh and Thua Thien – Hue. Relevant agencies of both Vietnam and the UK are working to help the families take the victims’ remains home at the earliest possible.

Essex police stated the families of the victims have been notified.

On October 23, UK emergency services discovered the bodies of 38 adults and one teenager in a refrigerated container truck at the Waterglade Industrial Park in Grays, Essex County, east of London.

Vietnamese police have arrested 11 people suspected to be involved in the smuggling of the victims. They are from Nghe An and Ha Tinh. British police have charged two men with manslaughter as well as human trafficking and immigration offenses.
