(VOVworld)- When the south of Vietnam was liberated in April, 1975, many people, who worked for the Republic of Vietnam’s government - the Sai Gon regime - stayed in Vietnam instead of fleeing abroad. Putting aside the past these people and revolutionary
activists work together to develop Ho Chi Minh City. Kim Dung reports.

Nguyen Van Hung of Ward 14, Go Vap district, Ho Chi Minh city was a military officer in the Sai Gon regime. After the south was liberated and Vietnam was reunified, he went to a rehabilitation center for two years and then set up his own business. He now owns a fast-food shop. Hung says:“The state does not force anyone to do anything. After getting back our citizenship, we gradually stabilized our lives. Our country is developing rapidly with political stability. Competent young people have a lot of opportunities to grow”.

In April 1975, Phan Hoan Ngoc Tuyet of District 12 and her family decided not to go to the US but to stay in Vietnam and begin a new life despite numerous difficulties and hardships. Tuyet says there was no discrimination against her and her family and the local administration helped her a lot: “The past has passed and it’s now time for the younger generation to develop the country. We have a son who is affected by Agent Orange but we receive support from the local administration for his treatment fees. During Tet, we receive gift worth about 40 USD. We get free bus and game tickets”.

Doctor A successfully separated twins Viet and Duc years ago

Like Mr Hung and Ms Tuyet, many people that served the Sai Gon regime have, since 1975, contributed to local and national development. Professor Doctor Tran Dong A, former Director of Pediatric Hospital No 2 changed his life after 1975. With professionalism and devotion, doctor A has saved thousands of children with birth defects. Doctor A successfully separated twins Viet and Duc years ago, gaining an international reputation. In recognition of his contribution to the Vietnamese health sector, the State conferred on him the honorary titles “People’s Doctor” and “ Hero of the Armed Forces”. Doctor Tran Dong A said:“I had never dreamed of peace due to the fierceness of the war. My ultimate dream was realized on April 30th when peace was restored. I decided to stay in Vietnam. The Party and State have pursued a policy of national reconciliation and opened the door to the rest of the world. I think overseas Vietnamese who love their homeland should return home. In our hospital, many people who left Vietnam in 1975 have now joined the volunteer surgeon team. The Vietnamese nation is unified and all Vietnamese people are one”.

Peace has been restored in Vietnam. The story about national unity and reconciliation creates a firm foundation for the whole Vietnamese nation to develop their country.
