Ireland, Nigeria, and the island nation of Niue in Oceania have ratified the treaty on the 75th anniversary of the US atomic bombing of the Japanese city of Hiroshima (August 6, 1945).

However, the validity of the treaty remains uncertain because all five members of the UN Security Council, all nuclear powers, have yet to ratify it. Japan, the only country in the world that has suffered an atomic bomb, has not ratified the treaty. TPNW was approved in 2017, when 82 countries and territories signed this document. The treaty will officially take effect 90 days after being approved by at least 50 countries and territories.
