On June 16, 1957, when President Ho Chi Minh visited Quang Binh province, the Bru-Van Kieu ethnic representatives asked for permission and the President agreed to let the people bear his surname. Since then, generations of locals have made efforts to be worthy of Uncle Ho's surname.

Bru-Van Kieu ethnic people living in Quang Binh and Quang Tri told the exchange program about their meetings with Uncle Ho and receiving gifts from the beloved leader. Prestigious village elders, household representatives, and students reviewed the historical milestone of having the surname Ho.

Mr. Ho Khay, 84, from Kim Thuy commune, Le Thuy district, Quang Binh province, said he will never forget the first time meeting with President Ho Chi Minh.

“President Ho Chi Minh told the people to produce a lot of rice, know how to save money and support the people in the South at that time. The bond between people and President Ho Chi Minh was affectionate. We took his surname to show our affection for the President and to follow the Party guidelines,” he said.
