7th National Congress of Vietnamese Catholics opens

(VOVWORLD) -400 priests and Catholics attended the opening session of 7th national Congress of Vietnamese Catholics building and protecting the homeland for the 2018-2023 tenure in Hanoi.

Addressing the event, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh praised the Congress’s theme of “Togetherness-Consultation-Service.”  He urged the Committee for Solidarity of Vietnamese Catholics to improve its operations to contribute to national development, build national unity, promote traditional ethics, culture, and religious values, and fight schemes to divide the nation and religion. Deputy PM Truong Hoa Binh said: “The Committee should gather and reflect aspirations of Catholics and churches to the State and the Vietnam Fatherland Front to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Catholics and churches. Efforts should be made to build stronger Catholic organizations worthy of their role as organizations that gather and unite Vietnamese Catholics.”

The Congress selected Priest Tran Xuan Manh to be President of the Committee for Solidarity of Vietnamese Catholics for the next 5-year term.
