The draw had been scheduled to take place in Singapore on August 10. However, due to the fresh coronavirus outbreak in the host country, it has been delayed, with the date for the new draw set to be in early September.

Initially, it was expected to hold the home and away format as usual. But the epidemic made it infeasible.

If nothing changes, the AFF Cup 2020 will be held in a centralized form, applying "bio-bubble" rules as AFC had successfully organized the AFC Champions League and the second qualifier round of 2022 World Cup.

The regional tournament was originally set to take place in December 2020, but it was delayed amid COVID-19 fears. It was subsequently postponed until December 5, 2022.
