Asian impressions at Cannes Film Festival 2023

(VOVWORLD) -The 76th Cannes Film Festival, one of the world's most glamorous cinema festivals, opened on Tuesday and will run for 11 days  in France. This year's festival features a slew of Asian films and promises to be an Asian year.

“Inshallah a Boy” has become the first Jordanian film to compete at Critics’ Week. Directed by Amjad Al-Rasheed the film tells the story of a young widow's extraordinary efforts to keep her home.

Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Monster” is back to competition for the Palme d’Or this year after last year's unsuccessful season. He won the top award in 2018 with “Shoplifters.”

Wang Bing, a new name of Chinese-language cinema and Vietnamese-born director Tran Anh Hung are notable competitors for the Palme d'Or.

Hung’s film “La Passion de Dodin Bouffant” is competing for the first time for the top award. Pham Thien An’s “Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell” is the only representative of Vietnam to be screened at the Directors Fortnight.

Malaysian-born actress Michelle Yeoh will receive the 2023 Women In Motion Award at the Cannes Film Festival for her outstanding career.

The K-pop group Aespa will attend the film fest as the global ambassador of the Chopard jewelry brand, the official sponsor of the Cannes Film Festival since 1997.
