Asia-Pacific lawmakers act in response to climate change

(VOVWORLD) - A 3-day Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) symposium for the Asia-Pacific region called “Response to climate change – lawmakers’ actions” began in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday. 

The event was attended by IPU President Saber Chowdhury, IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong, representatives of international organizations, and more than 200 delegates from 24 Asia-Pacific countries.

National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan chaired the meeting which discussed sustainable development goals, gender equality, health, and climate change. Other topic of discussion includes international commitments, the role of legislatures, and mobilization of resources for sustainable goals, particularly climate change goals.

Vietnam’s National Assembly and the IPU will introduce a toolkit designed by the IPU and the UNDP to help parliaments assess themselves on sustainable goals. There will be a ceremony to hand over the IPU chairmanship from the parliament of Fiji to Vietnam’s National Assembly.
