The 27 EU leaders expressed cautious optimism at the summit in Brussels, but urged the EU and its members to prepare for a no-deal Brexit.

UK chief negotiator chief David Frost said on Twitter that he is disappointed with the summit's results and understands that the EU is no longer committed to negotiating a future partnership as it promised. He added that the EU’s proposal is an "unusual approach" and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will decide on the next move on Friday.

The UK asked the EU to continue discussions next week in London and Brussels.

EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier said he will contact Frost and travel to London for a week. Barnier said negotiations must conclude the end of October so that the EU parliaments will have enough time to ratify the agreement before the Brexit transition ends on December 31.
