Canada stresses strategic importance of fostering relations with ASEAN
(VOVWORLD) - Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau expressed his wish to upgrade ties with ASEAN, engage more deeply with ASEAN-led cooperation mechanisms, and soon begin talks on a free trade agreement.

In a press release on Thursday, Minister Garneau underscored the strategic importance of the relationship between Canada and ASEAN, which is based on an enduring partnership of shared interests and cooperation that has spanned more than 44 years.
He highlighted opportunities to enhance collaboration with ASEAN members in politics, security, trade, economics, and possibly a Canada-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement.
He said Canada will continue to promote a peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific region in its engagement with all ASEAN members. This includes full support for ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus on finding a permanent solution to the crisis in Myanmar.
