Controversy over Obama’s 2015 State of Union address

(VOVworld) – US President Barack Obama has acted as a winner although the Democrats suffered a heavy defeat in the midterm election last November, said experts following Obama’s State of Union address. They praised Obama’s wisdom for spending the majority of his speech on the US’s economic accomplishments during his 6-year presidency. The speech was described as uncompromising and offensive, which called for cooperation from the congress and, at the same time, threatened to use veto right against any Republican bills that may roll back the health insurance program known as “ObamaCare”, tighten Iran sanctions, and offer preferential treatment for Wall Street financiers.

Professor Robert Lehrman, Chief Speechwriter for Former Vice President Al Gore, said Obama is laying the groundwork for whoever it is in 2016 to run against a Republican for presidency.

According to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, President Obama articulated a powerful vision of opportunity and prosperity for the working families of the US.

Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer applauded the President’s State of Union address which shows the US’s leading role in a united world to confront the threat of terrorism.

Republican lawmakers rejected several Obama’s proposals. Senator Cory Gardner opposed tax increases on the wealthy which will hurt American job creators. He said the Obama government has given too many concessions to Iran while not getting enough in return. Republican Ed Royce, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee, criticized Obama's efforts to combat global terrorism, saying the president has been too eager to declare victory over jihadist groups.
