The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his deputies. Floods triggered by torrential rains over the past few days killed at least 60 people and left 37 missing, destroyed hundreds of houses, and inundated 50,000 ha of crops in northern and central provinces. The Vietnam Fatherland Front has handed over 45,000 USD to help rebuild houses for the victims in Hoa Binh, one of the hardest hit areas.

On Saturday, experts gathered in Hanoi to discuss ways to prevent landslide and flash flood.

“It’s urgent to develop warning maps in high-risk areas, followed by an early warning system. This is a crucial measure to save life and property,”  said Doctor Nguyen Duc Manh of the University of Transport and Communications.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has indentified areas prone to landslide and flash flood but only a few automatic monitoring systems have been installed due to financial constraints.
