East Sea issue highlighted at conference in Germany

(VOVWORLD) - The Asia-Africa Institute at the University of Hamburg, Germany, on Friday hosted a hybrid conference in which international experts and researchers discussed the political and security situation in the Indo-Pacific region, especially on the East Sea (internationally known as the South China Sea), and proposed solutions to resolve conflicts in the region.

Participants affirmed that the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 2016 ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration are the most solid and important legal bases for dispute settlement in the East Sea. They said any unilateral act that violate international law, use of force or threat to use force against other countries are unacceptable.

The most optimal measure in resolving conflicts, protecting peace, security and stability in the region and in the world is to promote negotiations on the basis of international law and mutual respect, taking into account the interests of the concerning parties, and promoting trust and strengthening cooperation, participating experts said.
