Nguyen Quang Hung, Deputy Director General of the Directorate of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that the inspection team worked on how the EC recommendations on IUU fishing have been implemented.

Their recommendations focus on controlling fishing vessels violating foreign waters, monitoring activities of tracking, inspecting and supervising fishing vessels, fleet management, and fisheries traceability from fishing and law enforcement. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, localities, and units have fully provided progress reports and related documents, ensuring transparency, he said.

At October 28 meeting with the EC inspectors, Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh said Vietnam has been doing its utmost to ensure responsible, sustainable, and controlled fishing and is determined to eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. He urged the EC to recognize Vietnam’s efforts and lift the “yellow card” warning for the country.

EC inspectors will return to Vietnam in the next 6 months.
