Lieutenant General Pham Tuan recalled: “The Communist Party of Vietnam and President Ho Chi Minh held a number of important meetings at this bunker. They anticipated that the US would use B52 aircraft to bombard Hanoi. It was in the T1 bunker that the leaders designed combat plans, sent guidance to air defense forces, and issued major orders that led to the ‘Dien Bien Phu in the air’ victory”.

The US conducted the bombing campaign from December 18 to 29, 1972, to destroy major target complexes in Hanoi and Hai Phong. The operation saw the largest heavy bomber strikes launched by the US air force since the end of World War II. Dozens of B52s and jet fighters were shot down by Vietnam’s air defense forces.
