Fed raises interest rates for 10th time

(VOVWORLD) - The US Federal Reserve on Wednesday raised US policy interest rate by 25 basis point to 5.25%.

Chairman Jerome Powell raised interest rates for the 10th time in just over a year. However, he did open the door to the possibility of a pause.

"Today, the Federal Open Market Committee raised its policy interest rate by a quarter percentage point. Since early last year, we've raised interest rates by a total of five percentage points in order to attain a stance of monetary policy that is sufficiently restrictive to return inflation to two percent over time. We’re also continuing to reduce our securities holdings. Looking ahead, we’ll take a data dependent approach in determining the extent to which additional policy firming maybe appropriate,” said Powell.

On Wednesday, US stock indexes ended lower, after the Federal Reserve raised rates. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 270.29 points, or 0.8%, to 33,414.24, the S&P 500 lost 28.83 points, or 0.70%, to 4,090.75, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 55.18 points, or 0.46%, to 12,025.33.
