Fidel’s wartime visit to Vietnam celebrated

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam will always keep in mind the sentiments of Cuba and international friends to the country both in the past and at present, said Politburo member Tran Quoc Vuong at Friday’s ceremony in Quang Tri province to mark 45 years since Cuban leader Fidel Castro visited the liberated zone in southern Vietnam.

Mr. Vuong, who is also permanent member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat, said the Vietnamese Party, State and people will continue to work with their Cuban counterparts to preserve and cultivate the special friendship and solidarity between the two countries.

“The visit symbolized international solidarity and support for Vietnam’s struggle for national liberation. This ceremony is an opportunity for us to tribute Fidel and foreign friends. Their support has created important momentum for the Vietnamese revolution,” Mr. Vuong noted.

In his remark, First Vice President of the Council of State and the Council of Ministers of Cuba Salvado Valdes Mesa said Cuba will never forget Vietnam’s solidarity, recalling the country’s backing for the lifting of economic and trade embargo imposed on Cuba by the US.

To mark this occasion, the Fidel Park was inaugurated in Quang tri province on Saturday. The 16-ha park cost 6 million USD to build. Fidel made three visits to Vietnam in 1973, 1995, and 2003. He was the first foreign leader to visit the newly-liberated area in the south of Vietnam during the anti-US war.
