Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said Finland's membership in NATO will not change its basic thinking that Finland will always seek peaceful solutions.

Some MPs opposed the proposal, arguing that Finland's border would become the border between NATO and Russia. They said new tensions will likely arise during the accession process and affect Finland's foreign and security policies.

Sweden has also announced that it will proceed with the process of joining NATO despite opposition from Turkey because of security concerns.

In a statement on Tuesday, both Germany and the US said that the two countries can overcome the resistance to becoming members of the alliance.
