First-ever baguette festival opens in HCM city

(VOVWORLD) - The first Vietnamese “banh mi” (baguette) festival opened in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday night, bringing together 120 pavilions from domestic and foreign restaurants, hotels, bakeries and businesses.

The festival, to last until Sunday, is expected to attract 50,000 visitors. Notable activities will include a ceremony to honour top long-standing and famous bread brands in Vietnam, and a workshop on the development of  bread in Vietnam.

Ms. Bui Thi Ngoc Hieu, deputy head of Ho Chi Minh city’s Department of Tourism, said, “The festival attracted a lot of visitors on the first day. The event aims to honor Vietnamese cuisine and attract more visitors to Ho Chi Minh city. We plan to make the Banh Mi Festival an annual event.”

“Banh mi” was added to the Oxford English dictionary in 2011. It is ranked 7th among the best street foods in the world by TasteAtlas, a website dedicated to discovering fresh ingredients, traditional dishes, and authentic restaurants around the world. "Banh mi" was also named among the 50 best street foods in Asia by CNN.

“Banh mi” is a popular Vietnamese variety of sandwich that shares the same core ingredient - a baguette.
