FM reiterates Canada’s climate cooperation with Vietnam

(VOVWORLD) - Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said on Wednesday that her visit to Vietnam is part of Canada's new Indo-Pacific strategy and Canada wants to promote relations with a number of regional countries with Vietnam being the top priority.

Meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi on Wednesday, the Canadian FM affirmed the strengthened cooperation with Vietnam in climate change response and implementation of commitments at UN climate conference COP26. She said Canada wants to diversify and expand trade relations with Vietnam and agreed to promote trade cooperation, especially connecting businesses and supporting Vietnam in exporting agricultural products and reducing poverty. Canada wishes to further cooperate with Vietnam within the framework of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), she added.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Chinh suggested that the Canadian FM continue to promote cooperation in economy, trade-investment, development assistance, COVID-19 and climate change response, marine environmental protection, clean and renewable energy, digital economy, innovation, building green and sustainable agriculture, and training high quality human resources.

The Prime Minister called on Canada to continue to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese goods, especially agricultural products, to be exported to the Canadian market. He expressed his wish that Canada will work closely to support about 240,000 Vietnamese people living, studying and working in Canada to prosper, contribute more to the development of Canada, and boost the two countries’ exchanges.

The two sides also discussed global and regional situation and agreed to continue working together to make positive contributions to maintaining peace, stability, cooperation and development.
