Parliamentarian Peter Beyer of the German Bundestag delegation, said: “The Speaker of the Vietnamese parliament did an excellent job and excellent performance. She made a point to emphasize the cooperation between parliaments and parliamentarians of the region and rule of law, for example. So playing a strong role as a parliamentarian is the core issue.”

Mr. Beyer said next year Vietnam will take important positions in multilateral organizations including a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the 2020-2021 term, ASEAN Chair, and Chair of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA). He said parliaments and MPs should proomte multilateralism to ensure law-based international order.

Head of the Malaysian parliamentary delegation, MP Syed Ibrahim Noh, said Vietnam’s 5 proposals delivered at the meeting match the current global situation, which requires respect for the UN charter and international law. He voiced his support for Vietnam’s wish to strengthen parliamentary relations and promote the IPU’s missions for global peace and democracy with respect for international law and equality among sovereign countries.

“Supporting the development of parliamentary democracy is also in line with the ASEAN’s spirit of consensus and building cooperation and diplomacy. It’s very much in line with how Malaysia works with Vietnam in achieving bilateral trade and relationship,” Mr Syed said.
