Hundreds of thousands South Koreans demand President Park Geun-hye to resign

(VOVworld) – Hundreds of thousands South Koreans flooded downtown Seoul on Saturday to demand President Park Geun-hye to resign, one day after the country’s parliament voted in favor of her impeachment.

An estimated 500,000 people joined the protest, the seventh of its kind over the past weeks. This rally celebrated the parliament’s decision to impeach her over allegations that she colluded with a friend and former aid to pressure businesses into donating to foundations set up to back her policies.

A small group of Park’s supporters, mainly those over 60, gathered near the President’s Office to oppose the decision.

On Friday, the parliament adopted the motion of impeachment under which Park's presidency will be temporarily revoked. Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn has replaced her to lead the country.

The impeachment, which has to be reviewed and approved by the Constitutional Court within 180 days to remove Park from office.
