IMF, Ukraine reach staff-level agreement on a 15.6 billion USD

(VOVWORLD) - The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said Tuesday it has reached a staff-level agreement with Ukraine for a 4-year loan package worth around 15.6 billion USD, to support Ukraine’s economic recovery.

The agreement must still be ratified by the IMF board.

This will be the IMF’s largest loan to a country in conflict. According to the Fund, the agreement is expected to help mobilize large-scale concessional financing from other donors. The G7 is also expected to provide financial assistance to Ukraine, although details have not been released.

On Tuesday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said he will convene a high-level meeting with Ukraine next month despite objections from Hungary. The meeting will be held on the sidelines of the NATO foreign ministers meeting in Brussels on April 4 and 5. Stoltenberg said Ukraine’s President has been invited to attend the NATO summit scheduled for July in Lithuania.

The Pentagon said Tuesday that it is speeding up its delivery of Abrams tanks to Ukraine. It’s unclear how soon the US will begin training Ukrainian forces to use, maintain, and repair the tanks.  

According to Japan’s NHK news agency, at a press conference after talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Ukraine on Tuesday, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Japan will provide 30 million USD through NATO trust funds to help Ukraine purchase non-lethal equipment and pledged that Japan will continue to support Ukraine until peace is restored.
