Indonesia affirms stance on East Sea

(VOVWORLD) - Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsuidi and other ASEAN countries reiterated their firm stance of rejecting China's maritime claims, which run counter to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

She told a news briefing on Thursday that the countries already sent diplomatic notes to the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf. Minister Marsuidi said Indonesia is trying to establish sustainable diplomatic relations with the Pacific countries by prioritizing respect for territorial integrity.

Ms. Masuidi added that during the COVID-19 pandemic, Indonesia has continued to protect the Natuna sea from conflicts in the South China Sea, called the East Sea in Vietnam.
