Iraq sets deadline to announce new cabinet lineup

(VOVworld) - Iraq’s parliament on Monday gave Prime Minister Haider Al Abadi three days to present a new non-party cabinet to fight corruption. Iraq’s state television reported that, with support from 170 out of 245 congressmen, the parliament set a “final deadline" for Mr. Al Abadi, who said more than six weeks ago that he would replace ministers with technocrats unaffiliated with political parties.

Powerful Shiite cleric Moqtada Al Sadr, whose supporters are staging protests to demand reforms, on Sunday began a sit-in inside Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, which houses embassies and government offices. His supporters continued their 10-day sit-in outside the district’s gates. Sadr said Mr. Al Abadi would be questioned in Saturday’s parliament session if he did not meet the deadline.
