Israel, US reach deal to exile 200 Hamas fighters trapped in Rafah

(VOVWORLD) -Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US special envoy Jared Kushner reached an agreement to let approximately 200 Hamas fighters leave Rafah in southern Gaza and move somewhere outside the Palestinian territories, Israel’s Ynet news agency said Tuesday.

The two agreed to allow Hamas fighters to safely leave Gaza and relocate to a third country.

Earlier, Israel’s Channel 12 reported that Israel had proposed to permit Hamas fighters in Rafah to leave the area on the condition that they lay down their weapons, surrender, and promise to abandon terrorist activities.

The proposal was made after Kushner arrived in Israel to urge Israel to swiftly resolve the issue of Hamas fighters trapped in Rafah. Kushner reportedly told Israeli officials that the 200 fighters in Rafah should not be allowed to affect the broader agreement concerning the disarmament of approximately 20,000 Hamas fighters still active in other parts of Gaza.
