(VOVWORLD) -The 15th National Assembly on Monday elected Luong Cuong, Politburo member and Permanent member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat, as President of Vietnam for the 2021-2026 term.

The Assembly adopted a resolution on the election of Cuong with the approval from all 440 deputies present. After being elected, President Cuong took the oath.
“Under the sacred red flag with yellow star of the Fatherland, before the National Assembly and my compatriots and voters nationwide, I Luong Cuong, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, hereby swear absolute loyalty to the Fatherland, the people, the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. I will strive to successfully complete the tasks assigned by the Party, State and people.”
Afterwards, he delivered an inaugural address, saying “I will try my best to fulfill the duties of President according to the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the tasks entrusted to me by the Party, State and People. Together with the entire Party, the entire people and the entire army, we continue to care for, build and promote the strength of great national unity. Efforts should be made to building a truly clean and strong socialist rule of law State of the people, by the people and for the people."
"We will consistently implement the foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation and development, multilateralization, diversification, proactive and active international integration, while ensuring national interests at the highest level. Vietnam is a friend, a trusted partner, and an active and responsible member of the international community. We will strive to build a Vietnam with rich people, strong country, democracy, equality, civilization, prosperity and happiness.”

Born in 1957 in Viet Tri city, the northern province of Phu Tho, Cuong holds a bachelor degree in Party building and State governance as well as obtains high level of political theory.
He became a member of the Party in 1978. He joined the army in 1975, before serving as Deputy Head of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army in January 2016 and Head of the General Department of Politics in May 2016.
He is now Politburo member, Permanent member of the 13th-tenure Party Central Committee’s Secretariat, and National Assembly deputy of the 15th tenure.
