National population archive center opens

(VOVWORLD) - A national population archive center debuted Monday at a ceremony held by the Ministry of Public Security.

The center is the largest information technology project ever carried out in Vietnam. Every Vietnamese citizen will receive a 12-digit personal identification number at birth. When old enough, each person will be given an identification card which will be used for all administrative procedures.

Deputy Minister of Public Security Nguyen Duy Ngoc said the national population database is expected to improve the efficiency of State management, support socio-economic development, and improve national defense, national security, and social welfare. It will lay the foundation for a network of national databases and help speed up public services toward building a nationwide e-government, Mr. Ngoc said.
